5 Myths about Home Security

Some experts estimate that around 12% of houses in Australia are protected by monitored security systems. Nonetheless a burglary occurs every 60 seconds in Australia.
The Five common myths cited by victims of burglary are misconceptions. These are as follows:
Believe it or not, home security does not cost an arm and a leg. In fact some home security companies offer a basic level of monitoring for around $40 per month. You should factor in the discount you will get on your home insurance when assessing the complete cost of Home Security. Some insurance companies offer up to 30% discount on their insurance premiums. So you may find that the security system pays for itself in insurance discounts.
If you are technologically savvy you can design your own home security system without needing it to be connected to a monitoring station. Since no-one likes to pay ongoing monthly fees for home security, that is fine.  As an alternatively you may be able to focus on designing a system of sensors that sends alerts to your email address or mobile phone when sensors are activated. You can also set up surveillance cameras that can be viewed remotely.
Most monitored home security systems are now designed to accommodate for at-home pets. The sensors are simply placed in an area above the pet’s height, or may be put at a setting that detects movement over a certain size. Eg, some motion sensors can be set off if they detect motion of an object over 50kg. If you have pets, talk to a security company. There are probably many options available to you.

Tough financial times are making more people resort to desperate criminal measures. The average person will lose from $1000-$5000 from a burglary. Spending money improving your home security is like buying insurance. Even if you don’t get burgled you will at least have peace of mind.

This is another one of the biggest home security myths we’ve come across lately.  While yes the alarm company does make money off of the monthly monitoring they are also providing an invaluable service.  Home alarm monitoring is PROVEN to prevent burglaries and even save lives.  Ever heard a 000 call from a burglary victim?  It’s not fun stuff.  The monitoring station is there so you don’t have to call police or if you can’t get to a phone.  If the siren doesn’t scare off intruders, the sound of police sirens certainly will.  Not to mention alarm monitoring can keep your house from burning down in a fire or your family succumbing to carbon monoxide poisoning.  Not to scare you, but alarm monitoring is one of the most underrated services around today
